What you can do
Here are some safety tips from federal, state and local agencies:
From the ground, rake the snow from your roof. It absorbs water like a sponge, and the weight can cause damage.
Remove snow and ice from gutters, downspouts and around entrances.
Shovel snow around your house to establish a buffer several feet wide.
Clear snow from storm drains and around fire hydrants.
Be cautious at night and in the fog when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.
Keep children away from creeks, streams and drainage systems.
Don’t walk or drive through standing or flowing water.
Teach family members how and when to turn off gas, electricity and water.
Be ready to evacuate, and know your routes to safety.
