March 19, 2008 at 1:06AM

The special spring snow goose hunt is going on now in two dozen states, including Minnesota, Iowa and the Dakotas. Here's what you need to know:

South Dakota: A nonresident South Dakota license costs $45. (A youth license for those 12 to 16 is $25.) The season lasts until May 8, and hunters usually bag around 90,000. Snow geese are prevalent in the eastern third of the state. For more information, see www.startribune.com/a4152. A snow goose hotline is at 1-605-885-6401.

North Dakota: The snow goose hunt runs through May 4. Cost is $50 for a nonresident license. For more information call 1-701-328-6300 or see www.startribune.com/a4153. A snow goose hotline is at 1-701-328-3697.

Minnesota: Some snows migrate through western Minnesota, and annual harvest varies from a few hundred to 6,000. The season runs to April 30. Hunting permits are free, but there is a $3.50 application fee. For more information, see www.startribune.com/a625 or call the DNR at 651-296-6157 or 1-888-646-6367.
