How to check credentials, licenses

BEFORE YOU HIRE A CONTRACTOR

It's important to check the credentials of any contractor. Those who are state licensed and pull permits as promised have a much higher incentive to do a good job than those who aren't and don't. Here are a few steps to take.

Are they state licensed?

To find out, go to tinyurl.com/m3uc2x or call 651-284-5069. Some cities also require their own licenses. Plumbing work in Minneapolis is one example.

Are there legal judgments against them?

Look them up at tinyurl.com/4lzhua.

Did they pull a permit?

To verify this, contact your city or county licensing or inspections department. A permit holder is legally responsible for taking care of code violations, so be wary of someone who asks you to pull the permit. Some outstate areas do not require building permits. In Minneapolis call 311 or view up-to-date permits at tinyurl.com/dm5cjf.

Are you unhappy with their work?

If a code violation has occurred, a state inspector can help resolve the issue. Call 651-284-5069.
