U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who presided over a Democratic wave election in November, is headed for Minnesota in May as a guest speaker at an annual DFL Party fundraising dinner.
She will address party activists and officials at the eighth Humphrey Mondale Dinner, scheduled May 24 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
In a statement released by the state party, Pelosi called former vice presidents Walter Mondale and Hubert Humphrey "strong champions for working people, passionate advocates for civil rights, and leaders that lived up to the highest aspirations of our party. I look forward to honoring their legacy and celebrating recent Democratic victories with the people of the great state of Minnesota."
Hillary Clinton and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders are among the past speakers at the dinner.
State DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin said Pelosi's accomplishments make her the right person for the event, which is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota.
Her visit also comes as Democrats sift through a growing field of potential 2020 presidential candidates, including U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., a Mondale protégé.
"Speaker Pelosi was instrumental in the recent Democratic takeback of the House of Representatives," Martin said in a statement. "Under Pelosi's leadership, Democrats have been working tirelessly to root out corruption in Washington and advance the needs of all Americans."
