The Legislature will hold its first hearings next week on two GOP-sponsored bills limiting abortion rights in Minnesota.

One bill, sponsored in the House by Rep. Peggy Scott, would prohibit state funding of abortions. Another, sponsored in the House by Rep. Mary Liz Holberg, would prohibit abortions after 20 weeks.

Both bills will be heard in the House Health and Human Services Reform Committee. Scott's bill is scheduled for Tuesday, Holberg's for Wednesday.

House Speaker Kurt Zellers has signed on to both pieces of legislation.
