Details: Work is expected to begin this spring on the first phase of Metro Transit's $133 million project to expand its Heywood Campus in the North Loop of downtown Minneapolis — the construction of a four-level, 62,552-square-foot headquarters for the Metro Transit Police Department.

The new $27.5 million police building is an extension of the existing Heywood Office Building at 560 6th Ave. N. It is to be built on what is now a surface parking just to the east of the offices, joined by an enclosed connection. Concurrent modifications will be made to the five-story Heywood Office Building, including the addition of a new HealthPartners clinic for Metro Transit employees.

The department now has its headquarters in a 20,000-square-foot building at 2425 Minnehaha Av. S., but as transit operations have expanded, so too has the transit police. The department's workforce is expected to grow from 235 employees to 294 by 2020 and 397 by 2030.

The relocation puts the transit police headquarters close to Target Field Station, a multimodal transit hub. There will be room for 68 police vehicles in its parking lot.

The other component of the Heywood Campus expansion is a new bus garage on a 10-acre site along N. 7th Street. That $106 million project is expected to launch in 2018.
