In winning the nod from the Minnesota Medical Association's political action committee, Tom Horner, the Independence Party candidate for governor, got his first institutional endorsement.

Horner spoke of the endorsement at a debate in St. Cloud Tuesday. DFLer Mark Dayton countered that he had the endorsement of the Minnesota Nurses Association and Republican Tom Emmer joked that his wife Jacquie had endorsed him.

The medical association's political action committee, called MEDPAC, has also endorsed a disparate mix of Republicans and Democrats running for the state Legislature.

MEDPAC has not traditionally been a major player in Minnesota's electoral politics but Horner said the group's nod is a sign of his momentum.
