Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges is one of six women in the running for a "rising star" award from a national Democratic group.

EMILY's List, which backs women candidates, said Tuesday that Hodges was in the running for the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award, which "celebrates an extraordinary woman serving in state or local office."

The group singled out Hodges' work on improving police-community relations, implementing parental leave policies and fighting climate change, among other efforts.

"As an advocate for economic justice and improved access to quality education, Betsy Hodges embodies the passion for community and dedication to working families that we need from our leaders," Stephanie Schriock, the organization's president, said in a statement.

Also nominated for the award are Charniele Herring, a Virginia delegate; Tina Kotek, speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives, Cristina Garcia, a California assemblywoman; Ayanna Pressley, a Boston City Councilor and Michaelle Solages, a New York assemblywoman.

The award will be determined by an online vote, open to the public.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
