Historical Day for Tornadoes

Today's major outbreak of severe weather will coincide with the anniversaryof several devastating tornado events. A total of 61 tornadoes tore across 11states on this date in 1982. The twisters caused destruction in the southernPlains and the lower and mid-Mississippi and Tennessee valleys. The tornadoeskilled 29 people and injured 383 others.No deaths were reported when a tornado cut a 60-mile path from Newkirk,Okla., to Howard, Kan., in 1956. Twenty years prior, in 1936, a deadly tornadotore through Cordele, Ga. The twister caused $3.0 million in damages, killed 23people and injured 500 others. One person died when a tornado slammed Camden,N.J., in 1912. The twister also left $100,000 in damages.
