TARGET PLAZA OPENS

The occasion: The official grand opening of Target Plaza, gateway to Target Field, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, sponsored by Target Corp., the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Ballpark Authority.

The tickets: Single game tickets for the Twins' first season at Target Field go on sale at 9 a.m. at Target Plaza, online at www.twinsbaseball.com or by calling 612-33-TWINS or 800-33-TWINS.

The festivities: Pitching and batting games, baseball pennant decorating station, live music, baseball food and baseball-themed giveaways.

The highlight: At 11 a.m., there will be speeches, and an 120-pound polystyrene ball will roll down a cable into a large brass glove-monument on the plaza. Former Twins first baseman Kent Hrbek will pull a baseball bat lever to get the ball rolling. The ball has the exact number of holes and laces that are in a real baseball, said Ted Ewing, who is coordinating aspects of the event.
