High-profile hostages rescued

Ingrid Betancourt: The former Colombian presidential candidate, 46, was abducted in February 2002 during the election campaign. France has made her captivity a national cause, as she holds dual French and Colombian citizenship.

Marc Gonsalves, Thomas Howes, Keith Stansell: The Americans, who worked for a Los Angeles-based Northrop Grumman Corp. subsidiary as Pentagon contractors, were captured in 2003 when their drug surveillance plane went down in rebel-held jungle. They were the longest-held American hostages in the world.
