Now that center John Sullivan has returned from a calf injury, it will be interesting to see if right guard Anthony Herrera gets some work at center in Saturday's preseason game against Seattle.
Backup Jon Cooper started while Sullivan was sidelined, but Herrera played a few series at that spot against the 49ers on Sunday. Herrera said this week that he hopes to get more work at center.
"I don't have a problem with it," he said. "For guys like us, it adds value to you. The more you can do in this league, the longer you're going to stay in. I take it as challenge and I'm going to go out there and work hard, do what the coaches ask of me and get it done." Herrera's only experience at center came in 2005 when he played one preseason game at that position. He said he worked on snapping regularly in college at Tennessee so that was not a difficult adjustment. Coach Brad Childress said he thought Herrera looked comfortable in that role last week.
"He's trained there, he's got a real nice, firm snap," Childress said. "It's always a little bit different when you're playing with one hand out of it before the snap. I haven't seen anything to lead me to believe that he can't do that."
