Details: Ending years of planning, Hennepin County's new courthouse in Bloomington is officially underway after being approved by the suburb's City Council this summer.
When completed in spring 2019, it will replace the existing Division 4 courthouse in Edina as the Minnesota 4th Judicial District's south suburban location.
The county will construct a two-story, 36,000-square-foot building on the Bloomington Civic Plaza, adjacent to the existing city hall/police complex along Old Shakopee Road. While physically attached to the city police headquarters, it will essentially be a stand-alone building with no interior connections.
Its design calls for two courthouses on the second floor, with the ground level mainly used as a public lobby and Bloomington Police Department sally port, with access now provided to Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies transporting in-custody defendants to court hearings.
The new courthouse has been designed by Wold Architects to blend in with the existing Civic Plaza structures, specifically in its use of distinctive green copper exterior panels.
Hennepin County is receiving bids on the $15.7 million construction project and has indicated it hopes to begin work in November.
