Today will be a big day for Hennepin County Sheriff's Detention Deputy Daryl Cooper and his dog, Stella, as they compete in the 132nd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City.

Cooper and Stella, a Spinoni Italiano, will step into ring No. 1 at Madison Square Garden at 3:45 p.m. today as part of the show that features 169 breeds and varieties. A total of 2,500 dogs are competing in the two-day event.

Two weeks ago Cooper and Stella took part in cable television network Animal Planet's 2008 Eukanuba National Invitational. Cooper and Stella won Best of Breed in 2007 at Eukanuba.

After competing in New York and a brief return to the Twin Cities, Cooper and Stella will be off to England where they will represent the United States at the world's best-known dog show, Crufts. The show will be held March 2 in Birmingham.
