Hennepin County commissioners take their oaths

Hennepin County Commissioners Mike Opat and Jan Callison won re-election as chairman and vice chairwoman after a swearing-in ceremony last week.

Both received unanimous backing from the seven-member board.

Five commissioners took the oath of office Tuesday from Hennepin County judges while standing with family.

Opat introduced his sons, but failed to give daughter Tess a nod until later, prompting Commissioner Randy Johnson to tell Opat he would need to make "an extra trip to the Dairy Queen" for full reconciliation.

Randy Johnson took the oath from Judge Kevin Burke. The commissioner quipped that Burke was a year behind him in law school and that was the final time he was ahead of the judge in anything.

Judge Jay Quam delivered the oath to fellow Detroit Lakes native Commissioner Jeff Johnson, who marveled at having to call his childhood friend "your honor."
