Help your dog beat common allergies

June 25, 2021 at 1:54PM

Q: Our dog seems to be suffering from allergies. What can we do?

A: Many dog owners fail to realize that their four-legged friends can suffer from allergies. Common allergens that affect dogs are things that can be inhaled (mold, dust mites and pollens) as well as some foods and skin irritants.

Common signs of allergies in dogs include itching, loss of fur, irritated eyes, the licking of paws, dry skin and red, inflamed skin.

If you suspect your dog has allergies:

• Take a trip to the vet. Have your veterinarian evaluate your dog to find the best treatment plan for it, from cortisones or antihistamines to medicated shampoos. The vet may also recommend giving your dog Omega-3 fatty acid supplements.

• Test for food allergies. Try putting your dog on an "elimination diet" by feeding it just one protein type at a time.

• Consider skin treatments. If your dog is suffering from skin allergies, you may want to use aloe vera on the irritation to provide relief. Consult your veterinarian before applying any type of skin treatment to be sure it is safe for your dog.
