Help set the table for the troops

February 5, 2009 at 2:31AM

A group planning a steak dinner for soon-to-be-deployed Army National Guard troops and their families is looking for an army of volunteers to help set the table.

More than 200 people are needed to set up chairs, table linens and centerpieces Monday night at the St. Paul RiverCentre and Roy Wilkins Auditorium.

On Tuesday, more than 1,000 members of the 34th Infantry Division and their families will sit down to steak dinners. In all, about 6,000 folks will get the free dinner.

During its deployment to Iraq, the 34th will provide leadership, command, logistics and communication support for four active-duty brigades of more than 16,000 multinational coalition forces.

The St. Paul-based group organizing the event, Serving Our Troops, has served more than 30,000 steaks to Minnesota military members and their families since 2004.

Volunteers are being asked to work between 5 and 10 p.m. Monday. If you're interested in helping out, go to www. servingourtroops.com and click on "volunteer information." You may also send an e-mail to servingourtroops@comcast.net. Donations are also welcome through the website.
