Help for disabled guests at hotel chain

Hilton Worldwide will improve its accommodations for disabled guests as part of a legal settlement this week with the U.S. Department of Justice.

The department accused Hilton's hotels built since 1993 of violating the Americans With Disabilities Act by failing to provide enough handicapped-accessible rooms. The settlement announced this week imposes a $50,000 fine and marks the first time the department has required a company to ensure its franchised hotels comply with the ADA.

The requirements include ensuring accessible rooms have roll-in showers and tub seats, as well as adaptations for hearing-impaired guests. The 900 Hilton-operated hotels include those under the Hilton, Doubletree and Embassy Suites names, among others.
