Heavy snow has blanketed stretches of the Scottish Highland to the hills ofIreland in the wake of an early week wintry storm striking the BritishArchipelago with cold soaking rain as well as snow.A meeting of arctic cold off the Norwegian Sea with a series of wet Atlanticstorms will yield the waves of wintry precipitation.
On Tuesday, snow depth was at least one-half foot at Lough Fea, in the hillsbetween Omagh and Belfast, Northern Ireland.
In Scotland, cold, soaking rains were pelting Glasgow and Edinburgh, giving waynorthward to heavy snow over the southern Scottish Highland. High winds abovetree line were whipping snow, up to a foot or more in depth, into heavy drifts.
A meeting of arctic cold off the Norwegian Sea with a major Atlantic stormanchored right over the Archipelago has yielded the heavy wintry precipitation.
Through Wednesday night or even Thursday, this present storm will continue todeal out snow, heaviest of which will fall over the Scottish Highland, as itcontinues to spin through the heart of the region. Significant snow will fallover hilly areas elsewhere, such as Wales, north England and Ireland.
London and other big cities of England will experience cold winds and showers,even brief snow and sleet. However, significant snow accumulation is highlyunlikely.
Adverse impact of the snow will be confined mostly to roads crossing hills andhighlands of the northern United Kingdom and the island of Ireland. Here,travel over some of the highest roadways will be tough, even impossible for atime.
Threat of downed power lines and cut electrical power will persist.
