Heat and Smoke out West

August 29, 2009 at 12:25PM

Intense heat will continue to bake the Southwest today as four majorwildfires char parts of Southern California. A ridge of high pressure parkedover the region will allow temperatures to climb well past 110 degrees forsome.Calm winds have given the firefighters an edge in battling the flames. However, the absence of a breeze combined with the high pressure system has trappedsmoke from the fires close to the surface, generating air-quality problems inthe Los Angeles area. Wind would aid in clearing the smog and smoke out of thearea. Elderly residents and those with breathing difficulties should limittheir exposure to the outside air where there is smoke from the wildfires.
