We got clarity on maybe the two most notable Vikings free agents when coach Mike Zimmer met with reporters at the scouting combine.

Zimmer said last week that the team wanted veteran outside linebacker Chad Greenway back and that he had heard that cornerback Terence Newman wanted to play in 2016, presumably with the Vikings.

Zimmer also hinted that free-agent safeties Andrew Sendejo and Robert Blanton won't be back this upcoming season, at least not as starters.

One 2015 starter and 2016 free agent Zimmer did not mention, probably because no one asked him about him, was guard Mike Harris.

Harris, who had played offensive tackle pretty much his entire life, was a surprise starter at right guard last season. And he played pretty well at his new position while starting all 17 games, including playoffs. Pro Football Focus graded him as the 22nd-best guard in the NFL.

Overall, the offensive line was a mess, though, and Zimmer said two days after the season ended that the play of that unit was "sporadic." Changes are expected beyond the hiring of new offensive line coach Tony Sparano, but the Vikings are interested in keeping Harris.

The Vikings have been in contact with Harris' agent, Michael Ballard, about re-signing him and are expected to continue negotiations leading up to the start of free agency on Wednesday, according to a league source.

Harris, originally claimed off waivers after the 2014 preseason, would like to return to Minnesota. But he also wants to be a starter (and presumably paid like one). It is unclear if the Vikings see Harris as that or as a versatile and valuable reserve similar to top interior backup Joe Berger.

Harris has experience at both guard and tackle, which could increase the interest level of other teams should he reach the open market. We will see if the Vikings and Harris can find common ground before then.

The Vikings will have 17 free agents. Running back Matt Asiata and special teams ace Marcus Sherels are among those who could return.
