Group rewards clinics with cash for quality

More than 120 Minnesota clinics will share $310,000 in rewards for their quality care in depression, diabetes and vascular disease, the Buyers Health Care Action Group announced Thursday.

The group, which represents large employers in the local health care market, has been giving bonuses for several years to clinics that score well on a variety of quality categories, as published by MN Community Measurement.

The rewards vary from as little as $50 (for one clinic) to upwards of $100,000 for the Allina Medical Group, said Carolyn Pare, president and CEO of the buyers group. On average, the bonus works out to about $2,500 a clinic. But Pare said the reward program -- known as Bridges to Excellence -- is having an effect by encouraging clinics to report and improve their results. "It's the recognition for a job well done," she said.
