GREAT RIVER RAGNAR

The event: Twelve-person teams run 36 relay stints individually; each team is allowed two support vans, in which teammates can travel between legs.

When: Friday and Saturday, approximately 25 hours.

Where: Stretching 193 miles, the Ragnar runs along the Mississippi River, starting in Winona, cutting into Wisconsin and ending in Minneapolis, where there will be an after-party for the runners.

Fast facts: The Great River, which was the second of 13 Ragnar races, turns five this year. ... Each leg varies from 3 to 8 miles, and stronger runners will be able to assume a heavier work load.
