Gophers volleyball swept by Wisconsin in regular-season finale; men’s basketball blown out by Santa Clara

The NCAA volleyball tournament field will be announced Sunday.

Mimi Colyer had 13 kills to pace No. 10 Wisconsin to a 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 sweep of No. 18 Gophers volleyball team on Friday at Maturi Pavilion.

Una Vajagic and former Gophers standout Carter Booth each had 12 kills as the Badgers (24-4, 17-3) won their ninth consecutive match. The loss ended a five-match winning streak for the Gophers (22-9, 12-8).

It was the regular-season finale for both teams. The field for the NCAA tournament will be announced on Sunday afternoon.

Kelly Kinney had seven kills and Julia Hanson and Jordan Taylor each had six kills for the Gophers.

The Badgers defeated the Gophers 25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 25-16, on Nov. 5 in Madison. The Badgers’ last loss was to top-ranked Nebraska on Oct. 31.

Men’s basketball: Santa Clara 86, Gophers 75

Santa Clara never trailed after scoring the game’s first nine points and went on to defeat the Gophers 86-75 in the consolation game of the Acrisure Series on Friday night in Palm Desert, Calif.

The loss was the third in a row for the Gophers (4-4) and dropped them to 0-4 in games away from Williams Arena. On Thursday, the Gophers led by as many as 10 points in the first half but couldn’t hold on as Stanford rallied for a 72-68 victory.

After the Broncos opened a 9-0 lead with 17:43 remaining in the first half, the closest the Gophers got was five points — 13-8 with 13:45 left in the first half. A three-pointer at the buzzer by KJ Cochran put Santa Clara up 51-27 lead at halftime.

The Broncos, who shot 62% (18-of-29) from the floor and shot 8-for-12 on three-pointers in the first half, didn’t cool off in the second half. They led 71-40 with 11:44 remaining. The Gophers made the final score look closer by ending the game on a 20-5 run.

Cade Tyson scored 29 points to lead the Gophers. Isaac Asuma had 13 points and five assists and Langston Reynolds had 12 points. The Gophers shot 44% from the floor and were 7-for-24 from three-point range.

Christian Hammond scored 20 points to pace the Broncos, who had six players score in double figures. They shot 54% from the floor and 52% on threes (16-for-31).

The Gophers will open Big Ten play Wednesday against No. 25 Indiana at Williams Arena.
