Gophers sign 5 junior-college transfers on 1st day

Three cornerbacks, a wideout and a tailback headed to Minnesota

December 22, 2011 at 2:57PM

James Gillum, the sophomore running back who gained more than 2,200 yards at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, just texted to say that he's signed his commitment to Minnesota, and Gophers Illustrated has confirmed that the other four known J.C. players have all completed their paperwork today, too.
That adds three experienced defensive backs, a wide receiver and a tailback to the Gophers' roster, not a bad haul on the first day of Juco signings.
Also now signed: Jeremy Baltazar, a cornerback from Blinn (Texas) Community College; Briean Boddy, who played cornerback at Coffeyville (Kansas) Community College; Martez Shabez, a cornerback at Trinity Valley (Texas); and Caledonia native Isaac Fruechte, a wide receiver who played at Rochester Community Technical College in 2010 and redshirted last year while waiting to transfer.
All five players will be on campus when winter semester begins next month, and will take part in spring drills in March.
