Gophers return to ice 28 strong; no line combos set

Gophers coach Don Lucia said he is excited about being back on ice with his team.

The Gophers hockey team practiced for one hour on Wednesday afternoon at Mariucci. And all three coaches where there, head coach Don Lucia and his assistants John Hill and Grant Potulny.

NCAA rules allow teams two hours of ice time with the coaches this week and the next two before official practices open Sat., Oct. 2.

"It was great," Lucia said. "I was excited to get back out there. I am sure the guys were a little sore and tired from what we did the previous couple days [off ice]. The young guys are nervous as always when you go through that first time.

"It is just nice to set the season in motion."

Unlike normal practices during the regular season, each line was not wearing a separate color on Wednesday. Everybody was either in maroon or gold. Usually, the top two lines are maroon and gold, the others white, green and blue and the defensemen wear black jerseys.

"Normally we have our guys in [different colored] lines," Lucia said, "but early on we didn't want anybody saying I am on this line or that line. So we are mixing and matching and because we had eight forwards with each group, it was hard for me to tell who was who to be honest with 10 freshmen."

Lucia said he is not in any hurry to set lines.

"I want to get on the ice, three, four times, five times," Lucia said. "With so many news guys, there is so much that has to go in. Five of our nine defensemen are new. Chris [Student of Northeastern] is a transfer, He can't play this year, but still, so four of our eight [are new]."

Student is a former Benilde-St. Margaret's defenseman who played one season at Northeastern and has three years of eligibility left after sitting out one year.

"We've got six freshmen forwards that we got to teach them how we want to play here. Go over some different concepts of how we want to play. And that is going to take time. So we have to a lot of time, especially early, teaching. A lot of time with video with these guys to show them what we want to have done.

"But that is the fun part."

Impressions from first practice:

* Lots of bodies. More size, too.

* Gotta check to see who is playing with senior captain Jay Barriball, who will be the first line right wing? At least part of the time it was Nico Sacchetti at center and Mike Hoeffel at left wing.

* Jacob Cepis, or Papa Chirp as teammates called him last season, is still the smallest Gopher. He is listed at 5-8. Was funny to see him next to freshman center Nick Bjugstad, who at 6-4 is 8 inches and a full head taller.

* At times, four-man lines were rushing the goalie because each side had eight forwards split into two lines. Now that would be an advantage for the offense.

* Hoeffel smashed a player into sideboards, making quite a noise. He wants to be more physical this season.

* A clean-up crew was refreshing the aisles, dumping a liquid on the cement -- presumably soap and water -- and mopping it.

Next Gophers' one-hour, on-ice practice will be Friday afternoon. Lucia is considering three 40-minute practices next week. ... Media day will be Monday, Sept. 27.
