Gophers men add three-star point guard

Looking to add point guard depth, the Gophers landed a commitment Thursday night from three-star Florida point guard Bryan "BJ" Greenlee.

Greenlee, a 6-foot senior from the Rock School in Gainesville, Fla., had one other Power Five scholarship offer from Iowa last summer, but he also visited Cincinnati and considered Old Dominion.

Greenlee was named the Gainesville Sun's Co-Player of the Year for small schools after leading the Rock to its second Sunshine Independent Athletic Association state title. He averaged 13.7 points, 7.3 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 steals last season.

Pittsburgh transfer Marcus Carr will be the projected starting point after sitting out last season, but Greenlee gives coach Richard Pitino a backup option. Greenlee joins a 2019 recruiting class that includes four-star forward Isaiah Ihnen, four-star guard Tre' Williams and three-star center Sam Freeman.

Minnesota United will face the Houston Dynamo at 6 p.m. Tuesday on the road in their next U.S. Open Cup match. It's the second consecutive year the Loons advanced to the round of 16 in the tournament, which pits all levels of U.S. soccer against each other. They did so this time after a 4-1 home victory over Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday.

Houston won the Open Cup in 2018. The round of 16 matchup is a rematch of last year, when the Dynamo defeated the Loons 1-0 in Houston.

Nuria Iturrioz of Spain will get a special exemption to compete in the KPMG Women's PGA Championship next week at Hazeltine.

A member of the Symetra Tour and the Ladies European Tour, Iturrioz has three career victories worldwide, all in the past seven weeks.

The 24-year-old Spaniard won May 13 at the Zimmer Biomet Championship after winning consecutive starts on the Ladies European Tour: Lalla Meryem Cup (played in Morocco) on April 28 and the OMEGA Dubai Moonlight Classic on May 3.

A professional since 2015, Iturrioz is ranked No. 164 in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings. She has risen 231 spots this year.

• Senior linebacker Carter Coughlin of the Gophers was named to Phil Steele Publications' preseason fourth All-America team.

• Eagan goalkeeper Megan Plaschko was named the state Gatorade Player of the Year in girls' soccer. Plaschko, a senior who has signed with the Gophers, had 15 shutouts and gave up just eight goals.
