Gophers diver Sarah Bacon left the USA Diving Winter Trials with a silver medal won on the 1-meter springboard.
Bacon and teammate Kristen Hayden competed Thursday and Friday in Atlanta. Both reached the 1-meter springboard finals, and Bacon finished second with a score of 515.40. Hayden finished 12th with a score of 413.70. She also competed on the 3-meter springboard, finishing 11th with a score of 493.85.
Coach exits with 802 victories
Bob Mertz, the winningest high school softball coach in state history, announced his retirement Friday. Mertz coached New Ulm Cathedral to 802 victories and seven state championships in 39 seasons.
