Good news on the turtle front

Rare hatchling found in southwest Minnesota

He made it.

A tiny Blanding's turtle the size of a quarter was discovered in a muddy rut in southwest Minnesota earlier this month. There in the corn and soybean heart of the state, the little feller was cause for celebration among the wildlife specialists who are trying to bring the species back in that region.

Because if the Blanding's turtles can make it, that means the whole ecosystem there is healthier, too. The black turtles with their distinctive brown and black patterned under shells, are bit like the canary in the coal mine.
