Twins reliever Glen Perkins, on the comeback trail following surgery last year to repair a torn labrum, is being shut down for a week because of biceps tendinitis.

Perkins pitched in an extended spring training game Monday, but felt discomfort afterward. He received an injection and will need a few days for the medicine to treat the area.

In a text message Wednesday, Perkins said the discomfort is not bad but he didn't want to risk aggravating it.

"I didn't want it to linger, so I pulled the trigger early," he said. "The longer I let it linger, the worse it would get."

Perkins pitched in only two games last season. Friday will be exactly one year since he had surgery.

Etc.

• Hector Santiago (shoulder) threw three shutout innings for Class AAA Rochester during a rehabilitation stint. He gave up no hits and two walks while striking out two, throwing 57 pitches. He will join the Twins on Friday in Cleveland, where the Twins will determine if he will start or be used out of the bullpen.

• Righthander Phil Hughes (arm soreness) pitched an inning in relief for Rochester, walking a batter while throwing 19 pitches. He's scheduled to make another appearance for Rochester on Saturday.

FanGraphs and ESPN view the Twins roster as one that is flawed, but currently projected to win around 80 games.
