Given leeway to vote, man skips sentencing

November 13, 2008 at 4:44AM

A man who pleaded guilty to dealing drugs but asked a Ramsey County district judge to postpone his sentence so he could vote on Election Day skipped out on his rescheduled sentencing date Wednesday.

It wasn't clear whether Javontez L. Ross, 24, actually voted last week. But he wasn't in the courtroom Wednesday morning when his case was called. District Judge Margaret (Peg) Marrinan revoked his bail and issued a warrant for his arrest.

Ross pleaded guilty Sept. 11 to possessing several bags of suspected heroin. The judge said that because of his criminal history, guidelines call for a two-year prison sentence for the crime. Had she known that at the time, she wouldn't have let him go, Marrinan said.
