A 5-year-old girl is missing after a house she was visiting in Bemidji caught fire early Wednesday and an adult body was found inside.

Authorities are asking the public for help in finding Brittany Rose Balcer, who was not at the house after police responded to the fire.

Bemidji police and fire departments responded at 3:30 a.m. to a house fire in the 3900 block of NW. Irvine Avenue. When they arrived, the house was engulfed in flames.

After the fire was contained, an adult body was found inside the house. The identity of the victim will be released pending autopsy and proper notification of family, police said.

As police were investigating the scene, they discovered that Balcer had been visiting the home the night before the fire. They were unable to find her.

Police said Balcer is about 34 inches tall and weighs 50 pounds. She has blond hair and green eyes and was last seen wearing a black shirt, a pink skirt with stars, and a pink bandage on her arm covering a poison ivy rash.

Bemidji police are investigating the death with help from the Bemidji Fire Department, the state Fire Marshal, the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 218-333-9111.
