A 13-year-old girl has been charged with second-degree assault after allegedly stabbing a junior high school classmate in St. Paul Wednesday.

The charge was filed today in a Ramsey County juvenile court petition.

Because of the suspect's age, no additional details about the case were being made public, a county attorney's office spokesman said.

The girl remains in custody at the county's juvenile detention center.

On Wednesday, the girl allegedly cut the boy, 13, in the chest and arm with a small knife during an altercation in a hallway at Highland Park Junior High School.

Police spokesman Pete Crum said that the injuries were not serious, and that the boy -- who had been taken to Regions Hospital -- was treated and released Wednesday.

A third student who tried to intervene also suffered a minor cut to a finger.
