FORT MYERS, FLA. -- Kyle Gibson struck out three of the nine hitters he faced in his second spring start, but also allowed three hits, a walk and a run, and the Boston Red Sox snapped Minnesota's five-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory at Hammond Stadium.
Gibson hit his 50-pitch limit after pitching only 1 2/3 innings on a chilly, blustery day, and allowed a solo home run to Boston's designated hitter, Juan Carlos Linares.
Justin Morneau smashed a long blast over the right field wall off Red Sox reliever Alfredo Aceves in the fourth inning, but Boston, behind starter Clay Buchholz and three relievers, allowed the Twins to score no other runs.
Esmerling Vasquez surrendered the tie-breaking run in the fifth inning by walking the first two hitters he faced and giving up an RBI single to Ryan Sweeney.
The Twins travel to Port Charlotte on Sunday to face Tampa Bay.
