The first leaves are starting to drop in my yard. Pretty soon they will be blowing down the street and collecting next to the curb. It feels like fall, but it could end up as water pollution if left alone.
The Work for Water Neighborhood Challenge, sponsored by The Freshwater Society and InCommons, will award a total of four $500 prizes for best project ideas to clean up leaves, grass and soil from streets and storm drains this fall. The pollution found in leaves, grass and soil end up in storm sewers and then into lakes and rivers. This creates foul smelling and polliuted water. The challenge this fall is to come up with an idea to prevent this cycle from happening by cleaning up streets. The contest deadline is October 11 and winners will be notified on October 18th.
