Get ready to vote in August.

The Minnesota House Thursday overwhelmingly approved a measure to change the cabin season into a primary season by switching the state's primary from September to August 10.

The House voted 126-5 on the measure. The Senate unanimously approved a similar, but not identical, measure last week. The Senate may vote to send the measure to Gov. Tim Pawlenty early next week.

The governor has expressed support for the move, which would help military and other overseas voters get their ballots in on time and helps Minnesota comply with a new federal law.

Although the bill passed overwhelmingly, there were some split votes along the way.

Rep. Steve Drazkowski, a Mazeppa Republican who isn't running for higher office as far as I know, offered an amendment to require, "The chair of each major party must submit with the certification proof that the party's candidates for president and vice president are natural born United States citizens. Proof means providing a copy of each candidate's birth certificate." The amendment, which failed on a voice vote, would have applied to candidates for federal and state offices but not president or vice president.

Both Republican candidates for governor in the House also offered up amendments:

Rep. Tom Emmer offered an amendment to require voters to present photo id before vote. That failed 58-73.

Rep. Marty Seifert offered an amendment to limit the number of people vouchers can vouch for at the polls. It is now 15 and the amendment, which failed by a similar margin, would have lowered that to three. Although those amendments didn't pass, all three voted for the measure.

Rep. Rick Hansen, DFL-South St. Paul, Rep. Pat Garofalo, R-Farmington, Rep. Peggy Scott, R-Andover, Rep. Maurie Lanning, R-Moorhead, Rep. Tom Rukavina, DFL-Virginia, were the five who voted against it.
