George Thorogood turns Zoo into rollicking boogie bar

He was funny, fun and louder than any band -- ever -- at the Zoo.

George Thorogood and the Destroyers are a bar band on steroids. At least, that's the way they came across Tuesday in front of a standing-room-only crowd at the Minnesota Zoo. Here are few more impressions after a rollicking, crowd-thrilling 100-minute performance: · Thorogood, 60, mugs like Mick Jagger, struts with his hand on his hip like Jagger and is full of himself like Jagger – but makes fun of himself for being full of you know what. ("sometimes I'm so full of bleep even I can't believe it," he declared at one point.) · Thorogood is funny and fun. He sure has a lot of WWE in him. · Loved when he took his guitar and "knighted" a little girl (who looked to be about 5 years old) who was standing with her dad in the front row. · George loves to mix booze and boogie, stirred with his flashy slide guitar. · He did give shout outs to some of the stars whose songs he covers, namely John Lee Hooker and Hank Williams. But he didn't acknowledge Bo Diddley or Elmore James. · "Get a Haircut" – after which George said "Glad you can appreciate intellectual lyrics"—would be a perfect country song nowadays for someone like, say, Kid Rock. · Thorogood neglected to introduce the four Destroyers, save for guitarist Jim Suhler. Bassist Billy Blough and drummer Jeff Simon have been on board since the mid-'70s and saxophonist Buddy Leach signed on in 2003. · This was probably the loudest Zoo concert I've heard, with the decibels peaking on the fast and furious "Gear Jammer." Here is the set list: Rock Party/ Who Do You Love (Bo Diddley)/ Run Myself Out of Town/ Night Time (Strangeloves)/ I Drink Alone/ One Bourbon One Scotch One Beer (John Lee Hooker)/ Born Lover / Get a Haircut/ Gear Jammer/ Move It On Over (Hank Williams) ENCORE Tail Dragger/ Bad to the Bone/ You Talk Too Much ENCORE 2 Madison Blues (Elmore James)
