Citing the possibility of salmonella contamination, General Mills is recalling 168 cases of single-serve, reduced-sugar Cinnamon Toast Crunch bowl packs sold by food services such as cafeterias or restaurants.

No illnesses have been reported.

General Mills said the move is a precaution after an ingredient supplier warned that it had recalled one of its products "due to the possible presence of salmonella."

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy people who become infected typically experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and/or abdominal pain, the company said.

The recall affects about 168 cases of the reduced-sugar Cinnamon Toast Crunch bowl packs. No other Cinnamon Toast Crunch package sizes or varieties are affected, and no other General Mills cereals are involved, the company said.

The affected cereal packs have one of two "Better if used by" dates on the packaging: 31AUG2013 and 02SEP2013, General Mills said.

Anyone who finds the product is urged to dispose of it and call General Mills at the toll-free number 1-800-328-1144 for a replacement.
