Gear alert: The handiness of fluorocarbon line

GEAR ALERT

A small spool of fluorocarbon line is a handy item to keep in a tackle box, especially now that braided "super" lines are so widely used by anglers. And for good reason: Braided lines (most anglers have brand favorites) offer good bite transmission and hook-sets. Yet as good as braided lines are, tying them directly to jigs or other baits might give a visibility edge to fish. Counter by tying a 15- to 30-inch fluorocarbon leader to braided line. Perfection loops provide quick connections; double uni-knots are among other options. Many knot-tying video tutorials can be found online.
