Gary Roach: Fishing big muddy

Opening day has come and gone and all that is left for anglers on the Mississippi are the river rats. Did the walleyes quit biting on Big Muddy? Hardly; the fishing never has been better on the river and right now the walleye bite is exceptional.

So why do the anglers have a mass exodus off the river to the lakes? Who knows? Maybe it's that anglers of Minnesota have all these lakes to choose from and they are just partial to fishing their favorite lake. The Mississippi right now is fishing strong -- and you get to have most of it all to yourself.

Gary Roach is a professional angler from Merrifield, Minn.
