As the renovation of Maplewood Mall nears competion, four tenants have recently departed -- three clothing stores and another retailer that sells music, movies and video games.

Closing Tuesday was Suncoast Motion Picture Company, and shutting down in the past week have been the Gap, Old Navy and New York and Company, said mall spokeswoman Heather Haigh.

"We will be ready to announce information regarding new tenants ... and construction progress soon," Haigh said.

Anchored by J.C. Penney, Kohl's, Macy's and Sears, the 38-year-old mall is undergoing its first major renovation since 1988.

The makeover plans include redesigning the food court, redoing the five main entrances, new flooring and lighting, and adding carpeted lounge spots throughout the common areas.

"Our complete mall renovation is almost finished," Haigh said, adding that a celebration marking the completion is being planned for the spring.

Maplewood Mall is owned by Simon Property Group of Indianapolis, which also owns Southdale Center in Edina.
