Don Galloway won the John Beargrease mid-distance sled dog race, cruising into Tofte, Minn., 15 minutes ahead of the second-place finisher while wearing a borrowed pair of socks.

Galloway, a musher from Makinen, Minn., borrowed the socks from his wife August during his stop at the Finland checkpoint of the 150-mile race from Duluth to Tofte after his socks became wet.

Galloway, who won with a time of 10 hours, 3 minutes, received the $3,700 first prize.

"I told Don, 'All the socks are wet and you'll stretch mine out, but you're 20 minutes ahead so here,"' said August, who is six months pregnant with the couple's second child.

Galloway beat second-place finisher Sharon Nelson-Curtice of Rumely, Mich., by 15 minutes with an average pace of 13.3 miles per hour. He sprinted to Tofte in 1:35:54.
