A funeral Saturday honored three generations of one Bloomington family killed in a collision with a wrong-way driver last week.
Two-year-old Payton Bailey died after being hospitalized for a week after the Dec. 2 crash that killed his mother, Dylan Bailey, 24, and his grandmother, Dawn Chiodo, 51.
The family was driving from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport after picking up Olivia Nord, 18, of Richfield who had just graduated from Marine boot camp in South Carolina, according to the family in a Caring Bridge page update. They were driving to a surprise party to celebrate Nord becoming a Marine, but they never made it.
Near the Hwy. 5 entrance ramp in Bloomington, Patrick John Hayes, 34, of Savage, was driving eastbound on westbound Interstate 494 about 8:30 p.m. when he crashed head-on into the SUV. Chiodo, the driver, was killed, according to the State Patrol, along with her daughter, Dylan Bailey.
The passengers, 2-year-old Payton, Nord and Nord's mother, Jennifer Nord, 50, of Richfield, were all hospitalized with injuries, although the first emergency responder on the scene said he couldn't find a pulse on the child in the first minutes, according to emergency dispatch communications.
Jennifer Nord remained in serious condition Saturday at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis while her daughter, Olivia, remained in critical condition. According to her family, Olivia is in a coma with head trauma.
Hayes was in fair condition at Regions Hospital Saturday. All of the adults in the two vehicles were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
A fundraiser (gofundme.com/praying-for-payton-bailey) has collected more than $3,500 for the family. An Olivia Nord Fund has also been set up at Wells Fargo banks and an online page to help the family is at bit.ly/2gqdAhj.
