Many readers have contacted Whistleblower to complain about employment agencies whose main business appears to be taking money from the unemployed. The Federal Trade Commission this week announced 90 enforcement actions in a nationwide crackdown on these schemes.
"In these difficult times, it is the fraudsters who find their window of opportunity," Tony West, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's civil division, told the Washington Post.
Among the scams: A Florida company promised customers they could make $500 each week assembling "angel pins" at home, but despite paying hundreds of dollars for supplies, the customers were told their pins didn't pass quality control.
A New Jersey company made phony promises about postcard labeling. Another Florida firm made people pay to see listings for nonexistent jobs as "extras" in movies.
