From dandelions to high hurdles

Stillwater senior Marshall Davis is among the top hurdlers in the state. He shared his thoughts on track and field, his favorite sport:

Most memorable moment: Standing on the podium at the MSHSL track and field meet last year to accept my third-place medal in the 110-meter high hurdles. It felt incredible.

First sports memory: My dad coaching my T-ball team. He used to yell at us for picking dandelions in the outfield.

How important is track? When I'm not running track, I wish that I was.

Three things that you couldn't compete without: My hurdling coach, my track spikes, and my favorite water bottle.

Track and field is: The greatest sport on Earth.

Favorite event? Hands down, the 4x400 meter relay. I can't imagine a track meet without it. It is the last event so everyone is always crowded around watching and it is usually dark out so the stadium lights are on.

One small tip before a big meet: Stay calm. Just run your race the best you know how and don't let anything distract you.

What opponent really motivates you? This year for me, it's R.J. Alowonle from Park [of Cottage Grove]. He's one of the top hurdlers in the state and I look forward to every meet that I get to race him.

What aspect of practice makes you groan? The days I practice with the distance runners.

If you couldn't compete in track, what would you be do: Probably be wasting away on a beach somewhere with some good friends.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
