In advance of the State Canvassing Board's meeting Friday afternoon, the Secretary of State's office released the total number of challenged ballots in the gubernatorial recount deemed to be frivolous by local elections officials.

The total -- 2,874 -- nearly all challenged by supporters of Republican candidate Tom Emmer, falls far short of the nearly 9,000-vote lead currently held by DFLer Mark Dayton.

It turns out that roughly two-thirds turned up in Hennepin County, which has become the epicenter of recount wrangling by both campaigns.

The board's meeting was scheduled to specifically called to examine the frivolous ballot issue, which has emerged as one of the most contentious issues in the recount.
