A 35-year-old Fridley man was fatally struck by a vehicle Friday night as he crossed a busy road on the Fridley-Spring Lake Park border.

According to the Anoka County Sheriff's Office, Spring Lake Park police were called to University and 83rd avenues NE. just before 7:30 p.m. Friday. The victim, who had been hit by a car headed north on University Avenue, died at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle that hit him had swerved in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid him and ended up in the center median, authorities said. No one from the vehicle was injured.

The driver is cooperating with investigators and there is no indication that he was impaired, authorities said.

The victim's identity will be released after family members are notified.
