Denis Smirnov's third goal of the season — on a power play midway through the third period — was the winner as No. 6 Penn State edged No. 5 Ohio State 4-3 on Friday night in a Big Ten hockey game at State College, Pa. It broke a 3-all tie.

Evan Barratt, Brandon Biro and defenseman Cole Hults each had a goal and an assist for the Nittany Lions as did Mason Jobst for the Buckeyes. Peyton Jones stopped 41 shots for Penn State, Sean Romeo 39 for Ohio State.

No. 14 Michigan 2, Wisconsin 1 (2 OTs): Josh Norris scored his ninth goal of the season 33 seconds into the second overtime — which is 3-on-3 — to give the host Bulldogs a win over the Badgers. It will officially count as a tie, but Michigan receives an extra point in the conference standings. Mick Messner scored in the second period for Wisconsin, Adam Winborg in the third for Michigan. Jack Berry had 37 saves for the Badgers, Hayden Lavigne 20 for the Wolverines.

No. 3 MSU Mankato 4, Bemidji St. 2: Marc Michaelis' power-play goal with 4:15 left enabled the Mavericks to beat the host Beavers. Bemidji State had tied the score on Brad Johnson's shorthanded goal at 4:25 of the third. MSU Mankato has a 11-game unbeaten streak (10-1).

Nonconference

No. 17 North Dakota 5, Alaska Anchorage 2: Grant Mismash and Casey Johnson each had one goal and one assist as the Fighting Hawks beat the visiting Seawolves. UND scored three goals in the second period to take a 4-1 lead.
