Friday's college hockey roundup: Ahcan, Smith carry St. Cloud State past UMD

Freshman defenseman Jack Ahcan scored twice and Jeff Smith stopped 41 shots as St. Cloud State handed No. 3 Minnesota Duluth its second consecutive loss, winning 2-1 on Friday night in Duluth.

Ahcan, a Burnsville High School product, scored in each of the first two periods for the Huskies (10-10-1, 5-7-1 NCHC). Smith made it hold up from there, stopping 16 shots in the first period, 10 in the second and 15 in the third.

Freshman Riley Tufte (Blaine), a Dallas Stars first-round draft pick, scored his first goal in the third period for UMD (12-5-4, 8-4-1).

Miami (Ohio) 6, North Dakota 3: The RedHawks (8-8-5, 4-4-3) scored five third-period goals to stun the seventh-ranked Fighting Hawks (12-7-3, 5-5-1) in Grand Forks, N.D. It marked the first time since Nov. 1, 2013, against St. Cloud State that UND has lost when leading after two periods, a span of 82 games (77-0-5).

Big Ten

Penn State 5, Michigan State 2: Chase Berger, David Goodwin and Vince Pedrie each had a goal and an assist and the No. 4 and host Nittany Lions (15-2-1, 4-1) outshot the Spartans (4-14-1, 0-5) 46-26.

Ohio State 6, Arizona State 1: Nick Schilkey scored twice, David Gust had a goal and two assists and the host Buckeyes (11-4-4) scored three power-play goals vs. the Sun Devils (7-17-1).

WCHA

Bowling Green 3, Minnesota State Mankato 2 (OT): Mitch McClain scored at the 3:55 mark of overtime to send the Falcons (12-12-2, 10-8-1) over the 18th-ranked Mavericks (13-8-2, 9-6-2), who played at home for the first time since Dec. 3.
