Friday's Anniversary of the Deadliest Tornado in US History

Friday marks the anniversary of when the deadliest tornado in the history ofthe United States tore through the Midwest in 1925.The "Tri-State Tornado" touched down near Ellington, Mo., and did not dissipateuntil about 10 miles northeast of Princeton, Ind. This distance of 219 milesremains the longest continuous tornado path ever measured.

The tornado, with a mile-wide base, traveled an average 62 mph as it spednortheastward and left a massive trail of destruction.

The F5 tornado killed 695 people, injured 2,027 others, and caused $16.5million in property damage (1925 USD). The entire towns of Gorham, Ill., andGriffin, Ind., were totally destroyed. Eighty-five farms were also completelydemolished near Owensville, Ind.
